The Shake A Paw Rescue and Adoption Center is unlike any other Adoption facility. Located inside our state of the art Shake A Paw store and licensed as an Animal Shelter (Yes, we are a Shelter!!), we accept dog surrenders from the general public, as well as rescue homeless, abandoned and unwanted dogs.
We are a Registered New Jersey Charitable, 501c3 Non-Profit Organization providing animal rescue, shelter and adoption services.

About Shake A Paw Rescue and Adoption Center
"We don't want to bring him to a shelter" is what we heard time and time again. We have always been known for our super-clean facilities and our caring and knowledgeable staff. The establishment of our Rescue and Adoption Center was a natural path for us to follow.
The Shake A Paw Rescue and Adoption Center is a New Jersey Non-Profit Animal Shelter and Charitable Organization. Located inside our Union Shake A Paw store, we care for between 15 and 20 adoptable dogs and puppies at any given time. Since I have a soft spot for older and senior dogs, you will sometimes find a older dog available for adoption. Whether it's a puppy or a senior dog, all of our Rescues and Adoptions are loved and well-cared for by our caring staff of over 30 employees and volunteers. The Shake A Paw ® Center for Rescue and Adoption will provide animal rescue, shelter and adoption services for homeless, abandoned and unwanted dogs and puppies. Our Adoption Center will strive to place all of our homeless dogs in a forever home. We will provide low cost vaccine clinics which will allow all pet owners the ability to keep their pets vaccinated and healthy. We will encourage responsible pet ownership while reducing pet overpopulation by educating potential adopters about the many benefits of spaying and neutering your new best friend.

From the Garden State Parkway traveling NORTH:
Traveling northbound, get off at Exit 139B towards Rt. 82W/UNION. Bear right onto Chestnut Street/CR-619. Turn slight left under the bridge onto W. Chestnut Street/CR-626. Follow West Chestnut Street, The Shake A Paw Rescue and Adoption Center is approx. 3/4 of a mile down on your left, just past the post office.
From the Garden State Parkway traveling SOUTH:
Traveling Southbound, get off at Exit 140A toward RT-82/Elizabeth/Somerville/Newark Int'l Airport; get into "Exit Only Lane-22W". Follow Rt. 22 West about 1 mile, The Shake A Paw Rescue and Adoption Center is located on your right.
From Route 78 EAST:
Take Route 78 East to the Garden State Parkway South; Exit at Exit 140A toward RT-82/Elizabeth/Somerville/Newark Int'l Airport get into "Exit Only Lane-22W". Follow Rt. 22 about 1 mile, The Shake A Paw Rescue and Adoption Center is located on your right.
From Route 78 WEST:
Take Route 78W to the Garden State Parkway exit 52; get off at Exit 140A toward RT-82/Elizabeth/Somerville/Newark Int'l Airport get into "Exit Only Lane-22W". Follow Rt. 22 West about 1 mile, The Shake A Paw Rescue and Adoption Center is located on your right.
From Garden State Parkway traveling NORTH:
Traveling northbound, get off at exit 140 (Route 22, East 82 and Holland Tunnel). Take the exit and quickly stay left at the fork following signs to Garden State Parkway South, West 82 and Union. Quickly stay left again, following signs to 22 West, Somerville. Merge onto Route 22 West, follow the signs to Somerville. Travel on 22 West for 12 Miles You will see Costco on your left, then Rock Avenue. Go past Rock Avenue, Shake a Paw is 50 yards on your right, next to McDonalds.
From Garden State Parkway traveling SOUTH:
Traveling Southbound, pay the toll at the Union Toll Plaza. Stay to your Right. Get off at exit 140a (Route 22, Elizabeth) Go straight following signs for 22 West, Somerville Travel on 22 West for 12 Miles You will see K-Mart on your Left, then Rock Avenue. Go past Rock Avenue, Shake a Paw is 50 yards on your right, next to McDonalds.
From 287:
Exit Route 22 East. Follow Route 22 east through Bridgewater to Green Brook. Look for Washington Ave. Pass the light for Washington Ave, go almost to the next light and take the jug handle for Rock Ave. Bear to the left on the jug handle, and make a left on to Rock Ave. At the traffic light make a left. We are the 3rd drive on the right, next to McDonalds.
From 78 East:
Take Exit 40 Watchung and The Plainfields. At the end of the exit make a right. Follow that down the hill. At the bottom of the hill make a right. You are now at the Watchung Circle, once on there bear to the 3rd right. Follow that out to Route 22 West. Make a right onto Route 22 West. Count 3 traffic lights. You are now at Rock Ave and in sight of Shake A Paw, it is the third drive on the right past the light.
From 78 West:
